Unsustainable by Kaioshen Unsustainable by Kaioshen
The year is 2818 and our planet is dead. No longer able to sustain life, we colonized new worlds in hope of survival. Unfortunately, we did not learn from our mistakes and within years of our arrival the planets were dying. Like a disease, they rejected our terraform attempts to make the atmosphere habitable and started falling apart from beneath us.

With no other planets near with even a chance of survival, we had no other option but to find alternatives to our growing needs. A decision was made to mine the nearby planets for resources in hopes of sustaining our own; we can only stand by and watch as planets are being destroyed in order for us to survive. I hope it's worth it.

Did this one back in September. I don't think I destroyed the planet enough, but y'know, we can't have everything we want.

I think you chose well in terms of not "destroying" the planet more. Any object with enough gravity to force itself into a round (dwarf) planet isn't going to evidence a hole that size for long at all before it collapses in on it and "rounds" itself yet again.

A good balance of drama with realism!

Reminds me of Peragus. In Knights of the Old Republic lore, the planet was a source of fuel. Unfortunately, the fuel turned out to be rather volatile. The explosion reduced about half the planet to an asteroid field.

There were still a few quazi-independent colonies in the Belts and a few of the larger moons of Jupiter Europa, Ganymede and Callisto all had medium sized populations, mining being the sole reason for their existence. Most of the cities were buried miles below the surface. Orbital Pit Mining over the centuries had created massive spiral craters miles across a tortured landscape already scarred by high velocity objects; an ironic twist on the historic crop circles found on Elder-Earth that at the time were thought of as proof of extraterrestrial life…that even now had proven too elusive to detect. Callisto had the largest population since the radiation from Jupiter was not as bad this far out, but still required building subterranean cities in order to survive in short sleeve environments. Io, was still a nasty nightmare world and considered –Hades-on-Ice-…even on the cold side of the moon, automated mecha lasted only a few weeks before being replaced. In these isolated environments, tensions and emotions festered…those with highly developed Esper skills or outstanding charisma found it easy to manipulate others. Various shades of the Fatalist Movement sprang up throughout many of the colonies, brought by zealots on trade routes from the other moons. The Fatalist were convinced that the very presence of humans in deep space had set into motion the very mechanism of its eventual extinction…and that we owed it to any of the potential alien races yet to be encountered to do so quickly…many of the leaders of this Lunar Cult discovered that their personal convictions about self-termination only extending to others outside their faith was not as popular or as convincing in real life as it sounded to them in their head. When offered the chance to walk-a-bout in space or on the lunar surface without a breather suit, to test the sincerity of their faith, they found reasons to be suddenly absent from the conversation.
