The Last Colony by Kaioshen The Last Colony by Kaioshen
The Last Colony

I wanted to make a scene like you would see in a movie, about a colony fleet having to abandon their worlds and go search for new ones. I wanted to make it seem sort of actiony, I hope it can come across that way. It took about a little over a day to finish this piece, and it turned out pretty well. I hope the close planet's city turned out well, first time doing anything like that so I wasn't really sure. I honestly can't wait to get a tablet so I can make my nebulae better, but I guess the one above will work for now. :P

Enjoy the scene. :)

Awesome piece. What do you need a tablet for? Your nebula looks fine.

The ships remind me of the Rising Star from Battlestar Galactica...other than that....I really like it. Well done.

Thanks. I only used ships that were from the Star Wars series here, no BSG elements were harmed in the process. :D

Well, I would but I don't know how to do 3d modeling yet, so I have to find already made models for my scenes :/

Thanks for the offer though man, I appreciate that :)

The thing I love about you is the way you listen to feedback and then ACTUALLY make edits and resubmit. I always say I will and then never do. :P

Kudos for that though. ;)

And great work as always. Congratulations on the DD especially. It's really deserved. ;)

Certainly a great use of scenery to give the piece a sense of liveliness; you can think of that as meaning 'actiony'. ;p The planet bottom right is especially well done, great depth in the details and nice lighting. Edge has a slight touch of jaggedness though. The moon to the left also has a rather flat looking penumbra (the shade), this could be accounted for by the light pollution, but I just find it aesthetically displeasing. Perhaps if you made the shading of it more dynamic it would seem more spherical? For instance, making it darker in one particular furthest spot, giving its darkside a bit of a gradient. Nebulae is also nice and minimalistic, but still a little sketchy looking. Mostly because it just stops, perhaps a few more strand here and there would make that seem more complete. Regardless of those minor suggestions, it's a nice scene, with some great details and vibrance with its liveliness. :)

Nice critiques man, I agree with all of them. But as for the planets jagged edges, i'm not too sure how to get rid of that. It's always been a problem for me, I think it could be the texture layer, but i'm not sure.

Anyway, thanks for the help man :)

For the jagged edges m8, just select your planet before sharpening it, then right click and transform selection, bring it down just a tad, so that when you sharpen it, it will leave the outside smooth ;)

No problem! Glad to have helped.

Ah it could be the/a texture layer, I've had a few jagged edges before which were fixed by slightly downsizing it, since it went over the edges of the atmosphere a bit. Another potential cause is that the base layer is larger than the actual texture layer also. So eitherway it may have to do with the texture layer in relation to the atmosphere or underlying layers.

Yeah it was the texture, I made it a little smaller and the dark edges around the planet went away.. thanks again man, can't believe I didn't think about that before :P

Very dynamic colours and shading, has a sharp and movie-esque feel to it, and I like the texturing on the far planet too :D

Yeah, tablets would help with nebulae, but still, it is possible to do good with a mouse...thats all I had to work with in the years I've been doing digital art :p

Yeah, I know, every time I try to paint a nebula I fail miserably cause I can't control what I want it to do. But like you said, it is possible, i'm just too lazy to figure out how :D

Thanks man ;)
